Introduction: Borderlands Movie Review

This Borderlands movie review is about the first time I went to the cinema without reading the reviews beforehand, and that turned out to be a mistake. Borderlands is a disappointing adaptation — not because it’s based on a video game, but because of its numerous flaws. Video game adaptations are often criticised by fans when they stray from the source material, but this film fails even on the basics like script, acting and CGI/VFX.

Scriptwriting: A Major Letdown in Borderlands

The script in Borderlands is a significant issue. While the game is known for its humor, craziness, and over-the-top characters, the movie’s dialogue falls flat. It’s clichéd, unfunny, and sometimes outright cringe-worthy. The attempts at humour feel forced and out of place, contributing to the film’s overall disappointment.

Cringe-Worthy Dialogues and Stereotypes in Borderlands

In this Borderlands movie review, it’s essential to highlight the overuse of Hollywood clichés that feel awkward in the story. The actors seem to be struggling with the poorly written script, delivering lines that lack the necessary emotion and nuance, making the film feel more like a parody than an epic adventure.

Pacing Issues and Rushed Plot Points in Borderlands

Borderlands suffers from pacing issues, with plot points feeling rushed or forced. The emotional bonds, so-called “epic” moments, and sentimental encounters feel like they were inserted just to tick off a checklist of clichés. This rushed pacing only adds to the film’s overall failure as an adaptation.

Visual Effects: A Disappointment in Borderlands

The CGI in Borderlands is another letdown. Visual, the movie felt like a 4DX experience in a theme park where everything is done with “good enough” CGI for kids to not notice. While everyone is filmed in front of a green screen. You could really see it that obvious. Even someone who isn’t too deep in VFX, sensed something looks weird. The budget clearly went to the actors. Sadly…

Unbelievable and Illogical Scenes in Borderlands

Borderlands is riddled with illogical scenes that make the movie difficult to take seriously. I want to quickly mention following scenes. First for example where the group needs to cross a intoxicated river and there is only an old broken and rusty bridge, where they want to be really careful BUT they all go at once and also jump on the stairs at some point. WOW. Another scene later when the girl gives the soldier a bunny plushy which can explode and it did but some scenes later, he Is not dead, everyone else is dead around him, the floor is not broken and he holds the perfectly fine head of the plushy in his hand. The question is, what exploded?

Final Thoughts: Why Borderlands Fails as a Movie

I could go on and on but I’m tired writing and raging about this bad movie. It’s not only a bad video game adaption with a bad and rushed script with my called ticking off points from a list so they can finally end the movie. But also actors trying to act on it and feeling like they have to be video game characters but they are not.

Conclusion: A Friendly Reminder

Always check reviews before watching a movie to avoid disappointment. Borderlands is a clear example of how an adaptation can go wrong, making it a film not worth your time or money.
