Star-Studded Cast with Limited Chemistry

In this Minecraft movie review, I’ll examine how one of gaming’s biggest franchises finally approached cinema. A long awaited move from millions of fans of this beautiful game. When the cast was released, it definitely hyped many people up from different fanbases and genres. Old favorites like Jack Black, then woman or men crush Jason Momoa and for younger audiences Emma Myers. Not forgetting Stifflers mom, I mean Jennifer Coolidge and I am sorry to be unfamiliar with Sebastian Hansen and Danielle Brooks. (You may judge for being uncultured I guess).

This is a cast I thought is really strange, lots of big names but not like the Avengers. For sure there was some kind of synergy but I couldn’t seem to care about what happens to the characters.

The only one I genuinley cared about was Dennis. Dennis is a dog.

Breaking Down the Plot Problems

I think I will solely bash on this movie because it is just overly hyped. Some would call me now spoilsport and that I can’t let people enjoy things. I accept that but it is not true. I will judge the movie from my point of view as a filmaker.

So starting with the plot, I had some headlines written down in how I felt during the movie and after.

Those being, “A movie about explaining a game”, or “We need to put emotional scenes in there”, or “Why is this relevant” and so on. Other headlines will be about acting, more on that later.

For people who know the game, it was boring to hear Jack Black, playing the main character Steve in the Minecraft universe, first explaining Minecraft with a back story and voice over to the audience. Then later he explained Minecraft to the other characters. At one point I was like:” Okay we know what Minecraft is, so please do something else.” You could say that it is important to tell an audience, who never played the game, how everything works but at some point they don’t care and want to watch action.

Emotional Scenes That Miss the Mark

Next thing to mention are the emotional scenes between the characters which were over-the-top cliche speeches like “No, you are not alone” or “I thought you were my friend” and so on. I actually didn’t care what they were saying because it didn’t had a backbone. No relationships were build up over time but only shown briefly to state a somehow connection.

Plot Holes in the Minecraft Movie Adaptation

Then plot points which were unnecessary like why (SPOILER) would the dog Dennis need to go to the real world again? This didn’t make sense because in Minecraft are many dogs you can tame and everyone could have his/hers own. I guess they wanted to show Dennis is special but why can’t Steve keep his only friend and motivation to even go though this fight. This bothered me a lot.

Another scene or point is why Natalie(Emma Myers), is a fighing instructor at the end for a happy end? She never showed even the slightest fighting experience except hitting monsters with a big hoe(the gardening tool).

I leave my rant with those plot points here because the movie was just a big pile of script cliches like the presumed dead is coming back at the right exact time to save the kid who he betrayed. Similar things happen MULTIPLE times!

Minecraft Movie Dialogue: One-Liner Overload

My hand is hurting ranting about the movie but I need to write this. When I saw the trailer I was like cool lets give it a go. Then watching the movie I was like, cool is this still the trailer?

The dialogue was a collection of one liners:

  • Chicken Jockey (trashing the cinema is not cool)
  • I am Steve
  • Water Bucket… Release!
  • Ender Pearl
  • This… is a crafting table!
  • …

Choosing scenes for the trailer wasn’t so hard I guess but this really annoyed me when the music gets epic or quiet and the drop a one liner with a zoom on the face.

Minecraft Film Review: The Few Redeeming Qualities

I don’t want to solely rant about this movie because it did one thing kinda good. I laughed a lot. If it is out of shame or stupidity, I still laughed which is good for a movie. It is a reaction. Okay after some minutes thinking, I really can’t say anything else which is good about the movie. Maybe a lot of easter eggs I guess. Even camera wise I’m not convinced. They mostly filmed in front of a green screen, duh, but it looked really bad. All of the actors stood close to each other in every group shot because the green screen isn’t big enough.

Some special effects were also nice.

Final Minecraft Movie Review Verdict

For a movie which is so popular and making a lot of money, I don’t understand the hype or rating. Because even if you are not a filmmaker, you would still see the flaws of the script and over the top acting and Minecraft isn’t the place for over the top acting. The game is beautiful and you build your own world with a lot of fantasy and creativity which is then drawn into a joke.

I still let people enjoy the movie and this is only my review. I still had a good time.
