Beyond the Hype: Why This Film Deserves Attention
After some time writing my last review, I decided to write The Sinners movie review after watching this great film. I’m talking about “Sinners” written and directed by Ryan Coogler. A movie set in 1932 about two twin brothers, played by Micheal B. Jordan, who “return to their hometown in the Mississippi Delta, to start again” (IMDB logline). The main plot is them gathering people like musicians, cooks, barkeepers and security so they can open a hidden and somewhat illegal Blues bar on the country side.
Another thing to add before is that I don’t just go with the hype of the movie. This is a common problem with overly hyped movies like for example “A Minecraft movie” which I will review another time. The Sinners is actually good.
To continue explaining the plot a little, after gathering their people and planning the opening night of this bar, it first seemed like a movie focused on history and music. But it changed when this special music, performed by the character Sammie More played by Miles Caton, lured some vampires to the bar.
To prevent spoilers, this is as far as I go with the plot.

The Benefit of Going in Blind: A Trailer-Free Experience
I stopped explaining the plot and prevented spoilers simply because I want to give you the same experience as I had. I didn’t watch ANY trailers of this movie. The only research I did was reading some rankings to not make the same mistake as with “Borderlands”, where I didn’t even look up rankings and this made me waste time and money.
Dual Horrors: Historical Trauma and Supernatural Threats
So when I was confident this movie would at least be watchable as the ratings where sky high in a short amount of time, I had to give it a go.
And oh boy/girl, it kept its promise. The only information of the movie was that it should be a horror movie and the suspense was killing me. Starting the movie it was a historical narrative from the 1930’s and the cotton field workers with the point of view of their lives. History of the culture including the music was perfectly shown and you could feel the love of blues. Some tiny horror moments reminded me that it is a horror movie which makes it really suspense because you wait and want to predict when the horror starts. But if I’m real and don’t want to deny the obvious, the horror starts already at the beginning. Just it is real horror. Horror of discrimination and suppression of humans.
In the point of view of a white man, this was terrifying but extremely eye opening. To have both types of horror, where the second part of the movie is a metaphor of the first part. The white men is both times the antagonist.

The Power of Blues: Music as Theme and Supernatural Element
One of the obvious main red thread of the movie is about music. The music is strong bond within this community and keeps them together. New people get introduced every time someone plays an instrument or sings and they seamlessly adapt into the group as if they were already part of the group.
But there again, the music is not just a powerful tool in real life but also an actual power in the story with supernatural abilities. It is the same principle with the horror metaphors, one is fictional/supernatural and the other is real but mean the same.
Music combines the people and then past, present and future. The antagonist wants to take this music and power for himself.
Another thing to mention is the movie music, underlining emotional scenes or scary scenes in a good way. It’s not to obvious or cliche.

The Sinners Movie Review: Final Verdict
To conclude The Sinners movie review, I can confidently say this film deserves the hype. Not because of the actors, they still were a big part of the success, or music and cinematography but because of managing the story and its genre so well. When you think of a horror movie, you won’t think of anything like this. It is very special which makes it great. Having a different approach of combining multiple aspects like story and genre with the theme of a historic era, makes this movie a worth to watch.
I would definitely recommend it.
